10 under the Pen - 10 quick fire questions from XCracer.com

http://www.xcracer.com/Rab-Wardell-Interview-10-Under-The-Pen.html

At the moment I am settling into a training block to take me through Christmas and the New Year with some double shifts on the trainer, running and some home gym work. It's gonna be mentally testing and a little monotonous but has to be done. I'm back in hospital on the 17th of January and hope to be back in the bike soon after. However, I know it might not be quite that straight forward...

'til next time keep the top of the chain tight and go easy on the figgy pudding

Cross at the Castle 2011

(download)

Over the weekend I travelled to the Isle of Mull for the cyclocross event held at Glengorm Castle near Tobermoray. The weekend had been planned as an end of season bash for a bunch of our friends and we'd rented some swish cottages. Unfortunately the majority of our group weren't to make it due to an accident on the icy roads on Loch Lomond. Thankfully most of our group were unharmed, and the injured members have received the appropriate medical attention and are on the mend.

So Gareth Montgomerie and I made it over and undeterred Gareth went on to secure the overall series and Santa Cross World Championships to go with his national champs from last weekend. Not a bad season for a part timer... I enjoyed a few local ales, and a little more wine at the Tobermorey Christmas party. It was off the hook! There may be some video evidence of a special appearance from the one and only Father Christmas: he's quite a dancer...

Enjoy the pics and video.

Feeling Cross

Scx-black-wee

Man, all this talk of cross is getting a bit hard to take. I was getting all wound up for cross, like the rest of the KMP, way before the season started. Cross in Scotland is getting big - like really big - and there is a huge following and entry at the races. Everyone is talking about it, almost as much as how they have, or haven't, got an advent calander today... And the KMP urban cross video (check it out at the bottom of the post if you haven't already) just made me wanna get cross even more! Bloody scaphoid...

The Scottish Cross season has been in full flow since October when it kicked off on the beach in Irvine on the west coast; the 'wee man from Dalgety Bay' took that one. Some new and old venues have been visited including Knockburn Loch up in the Grampians, one of the most beautiful settings for a cross, or so I'm told. Last weekend I was chuffed cos my mate Rob '4real' Freil won the most recent round of the SCX at Meadowmill, smashing in a solo win from start to finish - I've mentioned he's hard right?

This weekend is the Scottish Championships at and old and favourite course at Auchentoshan, and organised by the Glasgow United guys and gals. It's looking like it'll be a tight race with Craig Hardie, Gareth Montgomerie, Dan Whitehead, Davie Lines, Colin May and a number of other riders looking good. 4real's not eligible to win the champs as he's off of England-shire, so he's opted out of entering at all. I might head up and watch with some of the Auchentoshan whiskey in my hip flask.

Following this weekend is the Mull weekend. On an island an hour by ferry from Oban, it's a bit of a trek to get to. However the promise of a 2 day event, a great weekend away, the last two rounds of the SCX series and the Santa Claus World Champs no less, it always gets a good crowd of riders and spectators. I'm heading over to watch this year and no doubt will join in on the Saturday night out in Tobermory...

Following this is my chance to finally race cross in 2012. On the 29th of December in Falkirk is the Christmas Cross, promoted by GJS racing. This looks to be a cracker and if I have the go ahead from the docs and I'm feeling pretty good this may be my final race for the KMP bofore moving to a new team in 2012. It would be good to go out with a bang, and I'm not talking about a puncture or a crash. Anyway, fingers crossed (no punn intended... yeah right!) that I'll be healed and ready to go on the 29th. Bring your cowbells and lets make the Chrismas Cross a classic.

Being injured is pretty depressing... unless.

Chill

It's a Friday night and I'm sitting at home. I'm training tomorrow and I trained today, so a night out on the sauce wouldn't be all that clever or constructive. And those turbo sessions just aint the same as getting out in the November sunshine. It's also getting further from that point in the month where I get to live my prefered extravegant lifestyle; pay day. I'm a pay day millionaire... I guess I'm trying to say I'm having a pretty crappy Friday night.

So anyhoo, while sitting at home, perusing the web (no, not like that...) I stumbled across this video. My love of BMX riding, and the love of BMX riding among thre KMP as a whole, is an entirely a public affair. This short film by Dave Sowerby (the man behind Danny Megaskills break through film, no less) showcases some of the finest BMX riders in Scotland at one of the best park's in the UK: Unit 23 in Dumbarton, just outside Glasgow.

This film gives you a sneak peak at the park and the riders. Some of the lines are breath taking and the level of BMX these days is unreal. I felt inspired and my mood has changed in an instant. So much so I decided to pop this blog up.

I want to ride my BMX

Getting the wheels in motion

Hey guys,

Since I was last on I've been getting things moving for 2012. I've written a column which is going to be on www.singletrackworld.com and I should have a few more coming over the next few months. I've also done couple of interviews for www.hitthehills.com and www.xcracer.com but not sure when those bad boys will be out. I've been getting on with my wrist recovery following a successful operation on my scaphoid and I'm so mean I won't let anyone write on my cast. I'm spending a little time on the turbo and have started strength and conditioning with my new coach Matt Hunter (@mhunterfitness on twitter), I'm currently recording a food diary (dear diary, today I had a pasty and 4 pints... ) to help plan how I'll go about loosing over 6 kgs in 4 months and I have turbo and run training plans written for me for the next 4 weeks by the Scottish Mountain Bike Coach Paul Newnham (http://www.xcracer.com/Scottish-Cycling-Paul-Newnham-Interview.html) so it's all busy busy busy! Thanks to those guys for their help. It's been a while since I've put together such ambitious plans and I hope to return to World Cup XC racing next June. It's going to be a long road so bring on the hard work...

Other than that I've been up to the following things: not in order...

1. Going to the legendary Glasgow Barrowland Market and not buying anything
2. Climbing to the top of the lighthouse museum for a city panorama
3. Eating cheese at the Condor Bikes Scotland launch at Ronde bicycle outfitters (not sure what the fuss was about really)
4. Visiting a very nearly finished Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome on work matters which is a big focus of my work at the moment.
5. Witnessed Andy Barlow of Dirt School hash together a pen holder for his moleskin diary using gaffer tape and a scary knife while wearing a beautiful hat.
6. Seen the final designs for the Glasgow 2014 mtb course and got excited about doing jumps and dual descending.
7. Bought lots of music including Ghost Poet (thanks Oli Beckingsale for the tip), Jurassic 5, Edward Sharp and the Magnetic Zeros, Naked and Famous, Foals and Celtic Spirit. AND I bought some sweet new Glasgow designed and engineered headphones from RHA (reid and Heath Acoustics) to listen to it on.

8. Had an amazing day at the wedding of Evan and Annette Oliphant. Congrats to the lovely couple! Also pleased to see Ian Wilkinson in a kilt!
9. Had a great night at the Braveheart Fund Dinner where £35,000 was raised to assist young Scottish cyclists. Thanks to David Waddell and Stuart Hannah for their hospitality at the HDS-ltd table! Great company!

Other than that not much has happened...

Back in a cast with the same broken wrist... seems like a good time for some reflection

Since my last post I've had a follow up appointment to check my wrist. I saw a different doctor and he decided to x ray my wrist again. Scaphoid breaks are typically a bit of a worry, with the big issue being a poor blood supply to the bone which can hold back healing. Worst case senario is that the bone dies and I was recently told this is the main reason for doctors to be sued for malpractice in the UK. So this doc was covering his back and fair enough. I got the photos done and next up I was told there was a clear break in my wrist still. I've got a full cast back on and have an appointment with the hand specialist next week. Hopefully in a month I can get back on the bike and start to sew the seeds for 2012's racing. It's gonna be a big year and I'll have more info on that another time.

Before talking about 2012 I feel it's a good chance to reflect on 2011. Around this time last year I wasn't sure what I was going to do. I was considering not racing as it was putting quite a strain on me in terms of cost and travel. I was in a lucky position as I am a member of the World famous KMP - this means my program was my own and there is no pressure to perform. Just ride, race, roam and enjoy.

I decided that this was a great chance to do some events I'd never done before and set some new challenges and to use this lack of racing as an opportunity. I've had an awesome time this year including winning No Fuss Events 10 under the Ben pairs, riding the West Highland way in just over 12 hours, climbing and decenting Ben Nevis at midnight, free-riding in Les Gets, Highland road tripping, Red Bull Minidrome, grass track racing and even the odd XC including a race win and a bronze medal in the Scottish Championships.

I'd like to take this chance to thank all the awesome sponsors and supporters of the Kinesis Morvelo Project, especially Dom, Paddy and Tommy V at Upgrade Bikes and Oli and the guys at Morvelo. We've had amazing support from Kinesis Bikes, Morvelo clothing, Marzocchi, Reynolds Wheels, Clif Bar, Green Oil, Leyzne, Oval Concepts, WTB, TRP, Exposure lights, Minx and Dark Star brewery (although I've still not got any beers up from these guys cos I think Oli keeps drinking them...) The KMP has been awesome this year and all the riders have achieved a lot! It's been great 'team' to be in!

Time to check out the highlights from 2011 bellow. It's been amazing.

West Highland Way in a Day - a huge day out! Glasgow to Fort William on some of the most knarley terrain you can imagine.

Escaping the City - Stefan Morrocco and I set about creating an intersting XC film in Glasgow. Check it out!

Les Gets - awesome time away with the guys. Met some great new people and rode some fantastic trails and even snuck in some cols on the road bike.

(download)

Highland Road Trip - road tripping with my better half Rach - up west with the road bikes, grass track racing and and XC race win

Red Bull Mindrome - the coolest night racing I've done in a long time - it brought XC, road, slopestyle, bmx, skaters, trackies and fixie rides together for a night of taurine and caffiene fueled carnage!

BMX - it was my winter project. I guess I'll have to take it up again in a month...

Other pics! - a random assortment of pics from rides, races and roaming!

Keep the top of your chain tight and press on the pedals. Oh yeah, it's winter too so maybe treat yourself to a beer.

Keep riding, racing and roaming and enjoy!

BMX

My buddy Dougie Young (a road racer on the endura development team) gave me a call the other night. He's an ex-skater, and was keen to hit up an indoor park near Glasgow.

We've decided to try and skate/bmx once or twice a week through the winter,

Here's a short vid of us at the park. We were both a bit rusty so this can be deemed as a before edit. Hopefully later in the year we'll have another edit with some new and improved skills.

Red Bull Minidrome Glasgow - pics and video edit

(download)

In my last blog I updated that I had broken my wrist. In my follow up appointment I was told I hadn't broken my wrist and my cast was taken off. I was probably as confused as you guys are reading this. Anyway, I don't have a broken wrist...

I had my cast removed about a week before the Red Bull Minidrome event was due to take place. I'd entered a while back and was keen to get on it like a car bonnet: I'd been excited about this event coming to Glasgow for a while. There were a few false starts as the event was due to take place in the summer due to licensing with other venues. In the end the date of 2nd October was set and the venue of the Old Fruitmarket in the Merchant City area of Glasgow is where the racing would take place. Red Bull went about doing what they do best and started organising a sweet night on tiny track racing.

I gave Kinesis a call to see if I could get a bike for the Minidrome. Luckily the track season was wrapping up for Oli P and his bike was posted up with some rather special Reynolds carbon track wheels which are the only set in the British Isles. I stickered up a set of riser bars with Morvelo logo's and fitted some lock on grips and flat pedals. The bike was ready to rock.

When I arrived to sign on on Sunday I wasn't expected by the organisers. I saw the sign on sheet with the letter 'INJURED' next to my name. I don't remember informing anyone I was injured but they knew. I managed to get signed on and my bike passed with flying colours through the bike checks and it also received some admiring looks.

I was due to qualify in group 2 from 2:30. Most of the riders where regular fixie guys, bike messengers and some hardcore street/bmx/park riders. I think I was the only guy there who normally lines up in lycra and has shaved legs... I was latter joined by another of the lycra brigade: Ross Crook of the Edinburgh Road Club. I gathered with everyone else as the first qualifier rolled out. I was stunned as were the rest of the guys and girls as Tom Asbergs flew round 10 laps of the world’s smallest velodrome in a little over 33 seconds. I had heard that 40 seconds would be fast round here and to be honest I was a little unnerved by this performance!

By the time it was my turn it was clear that 40 seconds was in fact a good time: no one had come close to Tom. I tentatively rolled my 6 practice laps before being held for my 10 lap qualifier. I decided to take it pretty conservatively and cruised round to the 3rd fastest time at that point with a little over 42 seconds. I was please. As qualifying went on I slipped to 10th and made the final 32 for the finals at 7pm.

When I returned that evening the event had jumped up a notch. There was a huge crowd gathering on the floor and the balcony, the Red Bull DJ had the beats turned to 11 and the atmosphere was growing. The remaining 32 riders would progress through knock out heats over the evening to eventually be whittled down to just 2 remaining finalists. It was also becoming clear that this was not some of the riders’ first bash on the Minidrome and we had some previous podium finishers in the building - Tom Asbergs and Kris Volmer. Slopestyle rider Ricky Crompton was also impressive in qualifying, seeding in 2nd place despite apparently arriving that morning drunk and in the back of a van... Sounds like me at a road race.

As the heats got underway the racing was tight. All riders upped their game with another rider on the track with them to chase or be chased by! There were also a number of pretty amazing bails! I managed to get through round 1 ok by catching my opponent. I was pretty scared going into round 2 as I faced second seed Ricky Crompton. I'd never met Ricky before but he's pretty burly, covered in tats and has a pretty snappy gate. When I told 4real Friel who I was up against he just shook his head and said 'Aw he's my second favourite for the night! Good luck...' In short, compared to Ricky I looked like a member of the S Club Juniors. In fact one of the girls from S Club Juniors...

I knew I had to get a decent gate and build speed so that’s what I went for. By the end of lap 1 I couldn't see Ricky in my straight and I could sense him in mine! As the race went on I could feel myself edging ahead and I was 'pumping the backside of the sweet trannies' to use an Andy Barlow trademarked innuendo... (ooooo-errrrr) I was getting a decent line, entering the turns high, exiting low getting a good boost out and I was growing in confidence. Going into the last lap it was close. Ricky made a mistake and bailed out the track in his straight. I made it through to the quarters...

In the last 8 I met Ross Crook. Ross is a good bike handler, quick sprinter on the road and track and is a former Scottish Track Scratch Race Champion. I spoke to my gang of hardy supporters and it was clear I had a decent chance of beating him! Again in this heat I trailed from the start; some people blaming my flats without clips. I pegged Ross back and with over 30 laps under my belt I was beginning to push the limits of my bike and the track. It was super tight and I edged back in front with 3 laps to go. At this point as I switched right to cut into the turn I felt my front wheel slide and head out of the top of the track. I bailed and hit the track like a sack of shit. I slid round to the ground and sat on my ass a bit pissed off with myself.

I retreated upstairs, defeated but smiling and I met with my rabble. A couple of pints were downed and I went to watch the final rounds. Ross went on to clinch 3rd with Tom Asbergs taking the win from Kris Volmer. The final race was so fast and the guys put on an awesome show.

Before the finals though the latest Danny MacAskill film Industrial Revolutions from the Concrete Circus show and filmed by MTBcut was shown on the big screen. Danny was at the event himself and as the whole room watched I noticed he stood trying to ignore what was going on and looked a little shy. It was amazing to see a guy who is a real world leader and mountain biking figure almost embarrassed by the fame he has accrued through his skills. I guess it shows what a down to earth guy he is and as the film finished and the crowd applause a smile and a raised hand was enough basking for him. An amazing rider who rides for one reason only - not fame or fortune but because it's what he loves to do. Awesome!

I just want to finish by saying what a great event to have in Glasgow and congrats to everyone who competed! I’d like to say fantastic work from Red Bull and their partners as well as Glasgow Life for the venue. Let it be the start of 3 years or more of amazing cycling events in the City. Come back soon!

Keep it rubber side down (not like me)
